FDA issues ANPRM to revise mandatory nutrients
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an advance notice of proposed rulemaking (ANPRM) in the Federal Register, Docket No. 2006N-0168, titled Food Labeling: Revision of Reference Values and Mandatory Nutrients. The ANPRM requests comments on what new reference values the agency should use to calculate the percent daily value (DV) in the Nutrition Facts and Supplement Facts labels and what factors the agency should consider in establishing such new reference values. In addition, FDA requests comments on whether it should require that certain nutrients be added or removed from the Nutrition Facts and Supplemental Facts labels. Current rules concerning DV have been in effect since 1993. Those rules were developed on diet and health information that was current at the time.

Ask your veterinarian to refer you to a specialist with an advanced degree in animal nutrition, certified by the American College of Veterinary Nutrition," she says. Start Simple If you're too busy to cook but want to add some natural food to your pet's diet, start with a natural, high-quality pet food -- one with no artificial preservatives, colorings or flavorings. Mix it with vegetables, grains and meats, and add a vitamin and mineral supplement, says Gardner. Chemicals to avoid include BHA, BHT and ethoxyquin. Dr. Ihor Basko, a Hawaii-based holistic veterinarian, recommends introducing a new diet gradually, since sudden changes can lead to vomiting and diarrhea. Other things to consider include your pet's age, health, metabolic rate, activity level and breed.

Blacks more likely to get HIV/AIDS
The NAACP, the National Urban League and other groups Thursday urged Congress to repeal a 20-year-old ban on federal funding for needle-exchange programs, the Associated Press reported. More than 200 such programs have been established locally and regionally across the country, with the aim of slowing the rate of HIV infection among drug addicts who might otherwise use contaminated needles. Advocacy groups say the ban on federal funding leaves many of the programs in a shaky financial position while deterring many state and local officials from supporting needle exchange, the AP reported. South Carolina does not have a needle-exchange program. There is some heroin use here, but most of the illegal drug use does not involve injections, King said. "It's not significant to the point where you would have to have a needle-exchange program," she said.
Fox plans to cut back TV pilots
The end may be in sight for the writers' strike in the US, but the fallout from the three-month dispute continues, with another studio threatening to rein in spending on programme pilots and development deals. Hollywood studios and the US broadcasters were already looking at ways of streamlining the costly annual cycle of developing and piloting dozens of scripted comedy and drama pilots as the growth of digital media eats into the traditional network TV advertising model. However, the production hiatus caused by the writers' strike seems certain to speed up the restructuring of the network TV production business. Peter Chernin, the chief operating officer of the Fox TV network and Hollywood studio owner News Corporation, yesterday said he was looking to cut costs in production.
Math-challenged Sheriff Joe Arpaio can’t account for the $41 million ...
Ironically, the Supreme Court struck down the porn part of the law soon after it was passed. But the exemption for Internet publishers stands. The U.S. Supreme Court has shown zero interest in entertaining a challenge to it, Goldman says, much less overturning it. Goldman believes Congress made a good decision. "It's very hard to put online service providers in the role of judge," he says. "If we asked online service providers to do this, they'd take the path of least resistance. They'd take the content down. And if they did that, we would see a chilling extinction of negative feedback about products and services in the marketplace." And so Web publishers today have the freedom to publish real, uncensored customer reports and, while they're at it, to publish false information.
