Seneca Valley to install gates at two entrances to its secondary ...

Seneca Valley School District is proceeding with plans to install gates at the two entrances to its secondary campus in an effort to tighten security, a move the district has been talking about for years.

School board members Monday voted unanimously to authorize the administration to work with an architect to help design a gatehouse and gate at the main entrance on Seneca School Road in Jackson. If needed, a security officer would be stationed at the gatehouse.

A locking gate also is being explored for the other entrance at the upper parking lot.

During the past eight years, eight separate incidents have occurred that forced the district into a lock-down situation or involved increased security, Assistant Superintendent Matt McKinley said during a 10-minute presentation that preceded the board's vote.

Gotta Feed The Kids

The K-Fed clan can continue to rest easy, for now, because there could be $200,000 coming their way. A major cable network has reportedly offered the pricy sum for a sit-down with the Kevs, and, believe it or not, he doesn't need to talk about Britney!

That's the kicker. According to a Federline source, K-Fed has been offered $500,000 to spill about Brit and has refused.

Nothing is set in stone yet for a new interview. Team Kevin are said to be angling for more money.

Do we really wanna hear him talk about his "career" or his role as a father???

If he ain't talking Britney, it's not worth it!

Does lack of sun put your health in danger?

Dreary northern winters are infamous for inducing depression. But being starved for sunlight can do more than kick you into a psychic hole.

A growing body of evidence suggests it can raise your risk of cancer, increase susceptibility to heart attack, diabetes and other disorders, and at least partly account for the region's sky-high rates of multiple sclerosis.

The reason is vitamin D, an essential nutrient produced in abundance by skin exposed to the sun's rays. Long dismissed as being important mainly for strong bones, the so-called sunshine vitamin is now recognized as a key player throughout the body, including the immune system.

Experts say vitamin D deficiency is much more common than previously believed — especially in northern climes, where solar radiation from October to March is too puny to maintain healthy levels.

Huawei's 3Com Deal Flops

The news release we issued on Feb. 20, clearly states that the only action taken has been a voluntary withdrawal by Bain Capital Partners, Huawei and 3Com of the filing the parties had made to the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States. CFIUS granted that request. The bid for 3Com by Bain Capital and Huawei has not been withdrawn. The parties, as the news release stated, are continuing to work closely to "construct alternatives that would address CFIUS' concerns." That is a far different situation than what this article portrays.

I Was a Progression Requirement Pusher

Students must obtain a cumulative grade-point average of 2.0 to graduate from my university. Sort of. In reality most students have to obtain a higher GPA for admission into a particular major. This second admissions hurdle is as important as gaining entrance into the university. Known often as a "progression requirement," it is one of the dirty little secrets in academe.

Is Obama Really the Liberal Reagan?

Now, you may not buy any of this, especially given Obama's rating as the most liberal member of the U.S. Senate. My friend Larry Kudlow sure doesn't seem to. As he wrote yesterday over at the Corner on the National Review website:

The Wall Street Journal's Steve Moore says Obama's tax plan would add up to a 39.6 percent personal income tax, a 52.2 percent combined income and payroll tax, a 28 percent capital-gains tax, a 39.6 percent dividends tax, and a 55 percent estate tax. In other words, Sen. Obama is a very-high-tax candidate.... Interestingly, at least two of Obama's top economic advisors—Austan Goolsbee and Jeffrey Liebman—are highly regarded free-market economists.... But somehow their candidate has a very punitive high-tax campaign plan for the economy.

I would say a few things in response:

1) Yes, Obama is for raising income-tax rates on wealthier Americans.

Why carbs are the new diet craze

Potatoes get a bad rap as little more than a waist-thickening waste of calories. But amazing new research puts spuds squarely at the center of the latest weight-loss buzz, along with other unfairly maligned carbs such as corn and rice.

The reason: All these foods contain resistant starch, a unique kind of fiber you'll be hearing a lot more about. In fact, experts agree that it's one of the most exciting nutrition breakthroughs they've seen in years. “Resistant starch has the potential to become the next hot nutrition trend," says Leslie Bonci, R.D., author of the “American Dietetic Association's Guide to Better Digestion." Indeed, more than 160 studies have examined this little-known nutrient's remarkable health and weight-loss benefits.

Resistant starch: The new power nutrient
Although this may be the first you've heard of resistant starch, it's likely been a part of your diet most of your life.

The People’s Magic Bus

Mod Vespa purists may scoff, but Piaggio's latest scooter, the MP3, is way more gear than its reverse-tricycle appearance suggests. Twin front wheels keep the bike upright on the bumpiest streets, while an innovative electrohydraulic suspension system lets them tilt independently, which means the rider can lean aggressively into corners at angles of up to 40 degrees. An automatic suspension-locking system stabilizes the rig at speeds under 7 mph and eliminates the need for a kickstand. Plus, there's enough storage for two full-face helmets, a small bag, and objects up to a meter in length — like, say, a Genoa salami.
