Beware of Oversimplifications - Health And Wellness

In their desire to make sense out of health information, people often oversimplify the truth. For example, potato chips have long been reputed as a junk food. Actually the quick cooking process of potato chips preserves its nutrients better than mashed, boiled, or baked potatoes. Ounce per ounce, potato chips provide more nutrients than other forms of potatoes. However, because potato chips are cooked in oil, they are high in fat and calories and are not recommended for people trying to lose weight. By being aware that the truth is not simple for most health issues, the tendency to oversimplify and over generalize health information can be thwarted.

San Antonio's NBC affiliate is taking a cue from hit reality show "The Biggest Loser" and launching a 12-week televised weight-loss competition here.

The series will debut on WOAI's "San Antonio Living" on Feb. 21 and be titled "San Antonio Living's Biggest Loser." Executive producer Dawn Cole hopes the weekly telecasts and online companion pieces — allowing the whole city to participate — will put a dent in our rep as one of America's fattest cities.

(In 2007, San Antonio was ranked No. 2 in the Men's Fitness magazine annual poll, right behind the absolute fattest of the year, Las Vegas.)

In any event, more than 160 people lined up at the station Wednesday — in answer to a "Living" call for contestants — to audition for the six spots.

After Super Tuesday, Time for Peace Movement to Get Off the Sidelines

There are differences that matter between Clinton and Obama, not as great as between the Democrats and McCain, but significant nonetheless. They are these:

Obama favors a 16-18 month timeline for withdrawing US combat troops. Clinton favors "immediately" convening the Joint Chiefs to draft a plan to "begin" drawing down US troops, but with no timetable for completing the withdrawal.

Obama opposed the measure authorizing Bush to designate Iran's Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization, widely regarded as an escalating step towards another war. Clinton voted for the authorization.

Obama opposed the 2002 authorization for war that Clinton voted for. Clinton still calls that decision a "close call" and refuses to say it was a mistaken vote.

It's true that both candidates support leaving thousands of "residual" American troops behind for a likely counterinsurgency conflict that we should all oppose.

Mix1 Protein, Energy Beverage Has A Buzz

Wes Brasher was managing the nonalcoholic beverage business for 7-Eleven Inc. in Dallas when he decided to make a lifestyle change. After relocating to Loveland 5 1/2 years ago, he not only changed his and his family's lifestyle, but he is helping other people change theirs.

Brasher, who started a beverage consulting business in Colorado, is one of the founders of mix1, a Boulder-based protein and antioxidant drink that is a convenient beverage for busy people who want to eat healthfully.

Brasher teamed with Greg Stroh, co-founder of natural fruit juice maker Izze Beverage Co., and health expert James Rouse to create mix1, which has been in the works since October 2005, Brasher said.

After Pepsi bought Izze in September 2006, Stroh paired with Rouse -- also known as "Dr.

Survey Reveals Heartburn Sufferers Experience More Heartburn During ...

CHICAGO, Nov. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Heartburn remains a burning problem for more than 60 million Americans each month(1), and this November, the National Heartburn Alliance (NHBA) is recognizing the need for heartburn education by sponsoring the first ever Heartburn Awareness Month.

Recent survey* results show that 66% of people experience heartburn symptoms during the holiday season. Additionally, and overwhelming 94% of people said they would enjoy the holidays more if they didn't have to worry about heartburn.

"November is a perfect time for heartburn sufferers and healthcare professionals to address heartburn, because more people tend to over-indulge in holiday meals," says Pat Baird, Registered Dietitian and NHBA Board member. "By incorporating lifestyle changes into their diets, heartburn sufferers can learn to alleviate symptoms so they can enjoy the holidays."

The goal of Heartburn Awareness Month is to screen, educate and treat heartburn sufferers.

Six Dead In N. Illinois Campus Shooting

The gunman was a former graduate student in sociology at NIU, but was not currently enrolled at the 25,000-student campus about 65 miles west of Chicago, according to Peters.

The shooting was the fourth at a U.S. school within a week.

"At this point, I'm being told it was less than two minutes. This thing started and ended in a matter of seconds," Peters said, adding that police had no apparent motive.

Witnesses in the class said "someone dressed in black came out from behind a screen in front of the classroom and opened fire with a shotgun," Peters said.

The gunman shot himself on the stage in front of panicked students, reports CBS affiliate WBBM-TV.

Desiree Smith, a senior journalism major who was in the science class attacked, said students crawled on each other to get away from the shooter.
