Procter & Gamble Sees Earnings Goal Hit Even Without...

Daily News Alerts The company announced plans to divest its coffee business to shareholders on Jan. 31. Chief Financial Officer Clayton Daley confirmed on Thursday the divestiture would likely be accomplished in a transaction that would cut P&G earnings by 3 cents to 5 cents a share annually, starting in fiscal year 2009, which begins in July. 'Our goal is to deliver double-digit core earnings-per- share growth even without the coffee business,' Daley said. The world's largest household and personal-care products maker also said it has not seen signs of consumers leaving its brands -- which include Tide laundry detergent, Pampers diapers and Gillette razors -- for lower-cost alternatives, despite the sluggish U.S. economy. 'We have not seen trade down to private label or lower- priced products,' Daley, P&G's chief financial officer, said during a presentation to the Consumer Analyst Group of New York conference, held in Florida.

GUINEA: Counting on hope and prayer as violent crime soars

Violent crime is soaring in Conakry, the palm tree-fringed island capital of Guinea that has descended into ruins as the country's economy has dragged steadily downwards during the last four decades.

Most of the violence happens in the eastern suburbs of Conakry, where the city's original plan of neat crisscrossing streets and broad tree-lined avenues has given way to acres of sprawling tin-roofed shacks, most without running water or electricity. The headless body of a young man, apparently a crime victim, was discovered Thursday in the eastern neighbourhood of Simbaya. His severed head was found a few metres away.

The districts of Nongo Tady, Kobaya, Sonfonia, Enco 5 have all been declared off-limits to United Nations staff, a classification usually only given to areas in war-torn countries.

Embassy Row

His life inspired Hungarians under communism and Europeans under Soviet domination during the Cold War, Mr. Somogyi said. As a teenager, Mr. Lantos escaped twice from Nazi labor camps in Hungary, joined the resistance and later fled from a postwar, Soviet-controlled Hungary.

"Tom Lantos was known to be the most energetic congressman, who used his dynamism and strength relentlessly to serve everyone's right to liberty and democracy, regardless of their nationality, race, religion, age or gender," Mr. Somogyi said.

"I have lost a good friend. My wife, Andrea, and the entire staff of the Hungarian Embassy share this sorrow."

Ambassador John Bruton, the European Union's representative in the United States, added, "Europeans everywhere owe him a great debt for his persistent opposition to oppression and for his contribution to the ultimate overthrow of communism."

Britney and Adnan Shop, Wander, Hopefully Don't Have a Baby

At least she's like of those breeders, she breeds kids (keeps popping out kids) and would have to pay for them $15,000 per piece per month until they're 18 or 21. Those kids at least have enough, although they'll have to rely on step mommies for any source of motherhood relationship.

Britney is the prime celebrity(?) example why we need to screen people before they can become parents. Or why we need license to have kids.

Who ensures the safety of pet food?

The FDA and state feed program officials regulate the industry, but it's largely self-policing. Pet food companies set their own standards for testing raw ingredients and finished products, said Greg Aldrich, an animal nutritionist with Pet Food & Ingredient Technology of Topeka, and a consultant to pet food companies.

They may test raw ingredients themselves, or they may rely on suppliers to show that raw ingredients are up to snuff, said Sakharam Patil of SK Patil & Associates, a consulting firm for pet and human food.

Typically, companies will take samples from random lots of raw products and test them. They look to make sure the product is what it is supposed to be, that it's free of foreign objects, that bacteria levels are low and that it's free of dangerous mycotoxins, poisons produced by molds or fungi, said Peter Clark, a food-processing consultant in Oak Park, Ill.

Max, a beagle's beagle

But the judge never picks him, and he winds up back in the Westminster doghouse. Snoopy has reason to believe this time. — Ben Walker of The Associated Press.

The picture on Sunday's Boston Globe sports page caught my eye — a beagle padding down the runway with his tongue hanging out. It was Uno, who had emerged as a favorite at the Westminster Kennel Club's dog show.

History was against him; a beagle never had won Best in Show in the 100 years of the event. The article described Uno as, "a tri-colored package of personality who loves to chew a stuffed frog toy. Barking and baying, he hopes to make noise and become the first beagle to win best in show at America's No.1 dog event."

The story pulled my heartstrings. Those of you who were regular readers of my column between 2001 and 2006 will remember our beagle, Max.

ORU alumni support sought

Uncertainty remained Saturday about what effect Richard Roberts' resignation as president will have on Oral Roberts University, but some observers said it was a step toward improvement.

"I think people are going to be waiting and watching: OK, can it survive without a Roberts at the helm?" said Donald R. Vance, professor of biblical languages and literature.

Vance said he thinks alumni need to support ORU as it undergoes this transition, after being led for 42 years by a Roberts. ORU professors are committed to the school's evangelical Christian mission, but that might not be obvious without a TV minister as president, he said. Christian colleges across the country are led by non-ministers -- "it will just be different for us."

ORU leaders have not addressed what role, if any, Roberts will have at the university.

Lower-income Neighborhoods Associated With Higher Obesity Rates

ScienceDaily (Feb. 10, 2008) — Obesity prevalence has increased significantly among adults and children in the U.S. over the last two decades. A new study appearing in the journal Nutrition Reviews reveals that characteristics of neighborhoods, including the area’s income level, the built environment, and access to healthy food, contribute to the continuing obesity epidemic.
