NY calorie rule applies to cocktails

Put down that margarita, and back away from the bar.

A new city regulation that requires chain restaurants to display calorie information also covers cocktails, sodas and other beverages that appear on menus.

"Drinks are almost the forgotten calories," said Cathy Nonas, director of physical activity and nutrition programs for the city's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. "It's almost a side thought to the meal."

The city Board of Health voted unanimously last month to approve the regulation, a new version of a law that had been struck down by a judge last year.

The law, scheduled to go into effect on March 31, applies to restaurants with more than 15 outlets across the country. That includes fast-food places such as McDonald's and sit-down chains such as Olive Garden and T.G.I.

Schools remind parents of reduced-cost meals

Collier County's public school district is reminding parents and guardians that reduced-price breakfasts and lunches are available at each public school.

The price of lunch in the elementary schools is $1.85 and in the secondary schools is $2.10. Breakfast for students at all grade levels is $1.

Low-income families and those faced with difficult financial situations may be eligible to receive school meals either free or at a reduced price and their child's meal status will be confidential. To find out if a child qualifies, visit www.collier.k12.fl.us/foodservice/frlunch/ and click on the "Income Chart" link on the left side.

If you qualify, print the online meal application, full in the requested information and mail the completed application to: The Department of Nutrition Services, 5775 Osceola Trail, Naples, FL 34109.

TRI-K Rolls Out 30 Scented Extracts

TRI-K Industries announced the introduction of TRI-K Scented Extracts, a full line of all natural, aromatic ingredients for cosmetic and personal care products. TRI-K Scented Extracts are touted as high-quality, natural extracts that meet formulators’ needs for natural fragrancing and odor masking. In a Freedonia report, "Flavors & Fragrances to 2009," it is predicted that flavor and fragrance demand in the U.S. will reach $4.6 billion by 2009, with gains being supported by the need to mask unappealing odors in active ingredients. This coupled with today’s increasing consumer demand for more natural products makes TRI-K Scented Extracts a perfect alternative to traditional synthetic fragrances, according to the company. "These all natural extracts provide excellent natural aromas and varying functionality," said John Carratura, senior technical information specialist at TRI-K.
