The film stars Keira Knightly, James McAvoy and Saoirse Ronan. The tragedy is that the trappings and recreation of the era are wonderful, but the characters are one-dimentional. We aren't given enough information about the relationship between the lady of the house and the housekeeper's son before they are separated to care about their fate as much as we should. ** Before The Devil Knows Your Dead At age 83, director Sidney Lumet has delivered a delightfully wicked film. It's the cherry on top of a career that brought us such classic films as Serpico, The Verdict, 12 Angry Men, Dog Day Afternoon, Prince of the City, Murder on the Orient Express, Network and Fail-Safe. This cynical and tasty melodrama is about a family that puts the “dys" in dysfunctional. Ethan Hawke and Philip Seymour Hoffman play brothers with very little in common except a desperate need for money.

Take stock of the broccoli stems
R.W., Griffin, Ga. ANSWER: The budding broccoli florets at the top of the plant contain most of the vitamins and minerals. As you work your way toward the stem, you make the transition to a food that's more fiber than anything else. Most people need more fiber in their diets, but eating the uncooked woody stem of broccoli could pose a bit of a challenge. Would you consider steaming the broccoli stem? Other possibilities are to cut it into thin slices and let it sit in a marinade to pick up some flavor, or to grate it and create a broccoli slaw. I recall that in the past you have stated that alcohol can have positive health effects. Is that why it is present in so many cough medicines? Please elaborate in your column if possible. G.E., Arlington Heights, Ill. I have written that there is evidence of a beneficial health effect from a moderate consumption of alcohol.
The Diet Industry: A Big Fat Lie
Like psychic readings and astrology hotlines, the weight-loss industry sells hope to desperate people. Americans spend $40 billion a year on weight-loss programs and products. They answer Jenny Craig's enticement to "lose 20 pounds for just $20" ("plus the cost of food") or Trimspa's offer of a seven-day supply of chocolate Hoodia weight-loss supplements for $24.95. We buy books and magazines that offer the insightful revelation that we overeat because we're bored. There are publications that promote weight loss via "food combining" or a diet that corresponds to blood type. Most offensive are alleged fitness experts who issue such advice as: "Keep your nose out of carrots, bunny. They're full of sugar. Pears, too—pure sugar." Meanwhile, they recommend chemical-laden diet soft drinks and salt-choked low-calorie frozen meals.

Can you hear me now? Analog cellular networks shutting down next week
This weekend may finally be the perfect time to drag Grandma into your local mobile phone shop to update that brick she keeps in her purse along with the Circus Peanuts. Come Monday, the FCC is allowing cellular providers to shut down their analog networks, and most of the major players are planning to do just that. Owners of devices ranging from cell phones to home alarm systems and even in-car assistance services may be in for a rude surprise. InfoWorld reports that both AT&T Wireless and Verizon Wireless, the only two major providers with nationwide AMPS (Advanced Mobile Phone System) analog networks, will be shutting their networks down on Monday. Even most small, rural providers appear ready to pull the plug on the deprecated technology in favor of all-digital networks.

What these wingnuts don't realize about Mike Luckovich, is that in November when/if a Democrat becomes president, he'll start making fun of them. It's called political satire, and I guess alot of whiners here don't realize that is the purpose of political cartoons. .
